© Photo Lauro de Oliveira Cabral. Lantern and ten outlaws, among them Maria Bonita were all beheaded and their heads were exposed on the steps of the church of Santana do Ipanema, Sergipe. 1938.
This photograph was taken on July 28, 1938, the city of Redondo Well, Sergipe. Lantern was killed by a cluster of military police Alagoas headed by Lieutenant John Bezerra, along with ten of his outlaws, among whom was his companion, Maria Bonita. All were decapitated and their heads taken as proof of their deaths, were exposed on the steps of the church of Santana do Ipanema. There were taken to Macedonia and then to Salvador. Were maintained until the 1970s, as "objects of scientific research" at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Salvador.
