The images of war dead
When can you post a photo of a dead American soldier?
The question is again on the printed pages and pages of screens.
And back with a vengeance in the image of Julie Jacobson of AP who photographed the "marine" Joshua Bernard wounded by a grenade thrown by Taliban.
The soldier died soon after Joshua.

The ethical question about whether to publish the picture arrived in the U.S. government. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates U.S. intervened personally in the episode. Gates wrote to the president of the Associated Press, Tom Curley, AP asking not to publish the photo. And the secretary has made yet another attempt by the AP, Robert Gates called Tom Curley and insisted on its claims saying that the publication of the image, which he described as atrocious, "violated common decency."
The AP news agency chose to give the image of the dying Joshua Bernard. The AP's director of photography Santiago Lyon, justified the agency's decision: "Afghanistan is no exception. We believe it is our journalistic duty to show the reality of war in that country, however unpleasant and brutal that it is this reality. "
The photographer Julie Jacobson wrote in his diary ... (translation rather than free)
"I believe that our social responsibility as a journalist is to capture and publish these images. We do not suffer opposition to photograph or publish the dead of the forces on the other side or even the deaths of civilians. Do these people are less human than American or other NATO soldiers? "
The blog Lens of the NY Times told the whole story.
Audio and photos of the photographer Julie Jacobson telling how it happened.

I think one of the most beautiful of photojournalism. Shooting was not shooting for anyone. In fact, much more interesting to do "artistada" practical photographer trying to be labeled contemporary and indulge in some galleries ... Things are slow fermented and not to give molds. Ephemeral ...
I get the illustrious Antonio Gaudério as day to day, which are not inert in the face of the world's ills and go ... Very fitting all the guys in the Aché not hesitate and go ahead in search of the decisive moment which runs to a thousand on this great mothership.
