Since September 11 the website The Black Snapper has a week dedicated to emerging photographers who participated in the last Brazilian FotoRio (International Photography Meeting of Rio de Janeiro) with solo exhibitions. The brand new Dutch site called the Rio Joan Mazza for the curation of the week of Brazilian photography in The Black Snapper, which is a showcase for emerging talent from around the world. The basic philosophy is to use the dynamism of the internet for easy viewing and possibly the discovery of talented photographers. The diversity of guest curators makes the selection process more objective, with no possibility for a single trend or preference dominating the content. Guest editors describe their motivation behind their selection. The display of each photographer includes an introduction and legend of all relevant photos. Each photographer may publish links to their own websites or gallery / agency if any.

The texts and commentaries that accompany the exhibition give an introduction contextualized and rich in information. Displaying a photographer by day and contextualizing their work is to differentiate the project from many others, is a unique and which can be very attractive to visitors and photographers. One of the primary objectives is to support the release and promotion of photography in Africa, Asia and South America The site is renewed every day at 00:00 am at the international time and still has the files section. This enables visitors more interested in a visit to search deeper with the earlier editions that preserves the selection of each week complete healing.

Joan Mazza is a curator, visual artist, photographer and cultural producer. His background is in painting at the School of Fine Arts from UFRJ and School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, for photography in graduate school in Photography as a Tool for Research in Social Sciences. It is part of the creative team and works since then as coordinator of the exhibition FotoRio (International Photography Meeting of Rio de Janeiro), works as a freelance, independent curator and exhibitions held regularly.

Fernando Rabelo interview the curator Joan Mazza:

1 - What is the visibility of the website The Black Snapper? What can influence the career of these new photographers from the time that their work is displayed there?

The proposed site each week to have a different guest curator of the world, each indicating seven artists, is naturally a propellant for a week the site has a visibility in the area of origin of these guests, especially the information to public with special interest in photography and can even generate spontaneous media site, as is the example of Paraty in Focus blog. Each week a new audience will have access to the site, by the way is very young, he started on August 1 last, so it has a little over a month. What can ensure that the public is increasingly motivated to revisit the site from time to time the proposal is to offer a content rich in possibilities, the knowledge source for international talent, and offers a more critical content with the tests. For artists and guest curators is one more possibility of visibility of their work. If the proposal is serious, there are no contraindications.

2 - Even though the images will be archived on the site, the nature of work is to edit material that will be in evidence only a day, or the duration of exposure is ephemeral. Working the look towards this feature?

Highlighting a single day is called to release the site until that everyone should have a highlight at some point since they are all also invited. But of course if there is interest in knowing a little more of the selection of the same custodian, or meet artists from other parts of the world access to these files is very easy. Entering the artist's page presentation looks exactly like the original.

3 - A contemporary photographic production in Brazil is very diverse. There is documentary looks with concern, or is merged with contemporary art. There is room for further experimentation? What are the criteria for editing?

I was invited to use the space to promote emerging artists who exhibited in FotoRio. Only after this criterion would have many options as we had 175 exhibitions this year alone. In a conversation with our general coordinator Milton Guran, we chose to use as criteria the individual exposures that participated in the main exhibition centers in FotoRio as the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Cultural Center of Postal and Federal Justice Cultural Center, where each received between the other four, 13 and 10 respectively exposures.
