Ludovic Careme

Ludovic Careme is a great traveler who two years ago settled in Sao Paulo. Here was born his last daughter, Liv, a year. Before, experimented with living in London and Paris, where he was born in 1967 in Clinical Metalworkers in Belleville. His parents were political activists, very involved in the movement of May 1968. When the photographer had not yet completed its first year, the barricades were burning on the Boulevard Saint-Germain.

Carême spent long periods in Asia and, before opting for Brazil, looked for Latin America (Chile, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras). "Sao Paulo is a showcase of the world," says Careme, who likes to work in urban spaces.

Poor students often give great photographers, Cartier-Bresson say so. Ludovic went through many schools in Paris and, at thirteen, I wanted to stop the studies, but the mother did not leave. A friend of model, Isabelle Smith, had taken him to know the photographer's studio and Georges Tordjman fascination was instant. Ludovic decided immediately that I wanted to be a photographer, and soon after bought his first camera, a Konica, and a magnifier.

Just finishing high school, the University, where he studied Art History and MA in Spanish. Then he studied for three years the school shooting in Toulouse, which formed in 1991 out. The first money he earned in the profession has been shooting and selling photos to patrons from the Mediterranean beaches in the south of France. Then, realized her dream of knowing Asia, spending six months traveling around China, especially the south where he photographed minorities, Vietnam, Cambodia and Hong Kong.

He returned to Paris in 1992, when he met the now award-winning Jean-Christian Bourcart, who lives in New York. He started working with him and went to Bosnia, where the conflict began. Bourcart made the film "Evis" Careme took care of the sound. Stayed there for six months. Carême was in Bosnia that met war correspondent for the French newspaper Libération, which landed her first commissioned work, a story about Bosnian refugees in Sarajevo. Back in Paris, he began working for the Liberation as pigiste (frila) for two years. He felt at home in this left-wing newspaper, founded in 1968, where all received equal pay, from the janitor to the director.

He began working for other newspapers and magazines, being called by Le Monde, L'Express, Elle, and later, journals worldwide.

His passion is the picture, he said a good excuse to meet people. Still basically using a Hasselblad and Kodak Portra films 160 and NC 400 for color and classic TriX PlusX 320 or even for white and black. Not yet joined the digital back. Never using flash sometimes uses tripod and possibly light continues. Most of the pictures that did were commissioned by publications such as Elle, Vogue, Le Monde, Libération, New York Times, Télérama, L'Express, La Repubblica del Donne, The Independent, l'Equipe Magazine, Marie Claire, L'Expres, Vogue Brazil, Trip, S / N ˚, Bravo, Rolling Stone, Folha de São Paulo and Mag Magazine

His idols are Diane Arbus, Robert Frank and South African David Goldblatt. Do not sit next to the classics such as Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis. Among contemporaries, appreciates the work of Antoine d'Agata, Lize Sarfati and Jean-Christian Bourcart.

Careme think you can still live photography, but you must be a tough. In the last five years there has been a dramatic change in outlook, to the detriment of freedom. It's a new world marked by economic crisis, the Internet and digital. The information has been sacrificed, is the predominance of marketing. This is a global phenomenon, the newspaper changed hands, took over the business. There is a asseptização photography, final decisions depend on the marketing and advertising. Moreover, today the fate of the photographs is more than the press gallery. Ludovic photograph does not differentiate between anonymous or famous, they are all people. The portrait is the occasion for a meeting, the construction of a bridge.

Abadjian Laurent , a former photo editor of Libération, current photo editor of the magazine Télérama and author of the new graphic design of the newspaper Le Monde, as well as a portrait sets Ludovic Careme:

"The portrait is not simply a photograph of someone. It's another thing. The nuance may seem minimal, perhaps insignificant, but it is lighter, it has a name: the photographer. A portrait is not the image of someone. The image of an encounter between photographer and model. It is the image of the relation of forces that is established at the time of the photo. Given the model will give you an image controlled, often ascetic, the photographer has to show strength and to give his own view of the person who should make the picture. Ludovic Careme is a photographer resistant. With infinite respect for his model, has a total area of the frame as much light and time, their weapons to fine tune your writing. "

Among those portrayed by Ludovic Careme find characters like Charlotte Rampling, Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, Penelope Cruz, Julie Depardieu, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Coco Rosie, Seu Jorge, Tricky, Tracy Chapman, Paul Auster, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Brian de Palma, Emmanuelle Béart, Takeshi Kitano and Oscar Niemeyer.

It is difficult to choose the most successful. The photographer says that he gave but work and worry was shooting for the Liberation, the then president of Gabon, Omar Bongo, who ruled with an iron hand the country until his death in 2009.

Bongo wanted a classic photo, protocol, one of the anterooms of the palace in Libreville. Carême knew the dictator had an office with a large world map. For two days he stayed in the palace, with an aide at his heels. On the third day, Bongo gave him fifteen minutes, in which the patient Careme got a fantastic picture of the situation.

At the opposite extreme, Careme Angelica photographed for the magazine Gloss. Reads the magazine's website: "Gloss magazine cover this month (April), Angelica made unusual revelations about his relationship with Luciano Huck. She talked about her husband's favorite hobby, photography. 'The lust must be fed. Luciano and I have with the care of our photography. He loves to shoot and do some tests using my sexy model. I love! '"Hard task to Careme!

Michael Caine was photographed at the Deauville festival, for Figaro Magazine. Paul Auster was clicked to take breakfast in a bar in Saint Michel, for the magazine Jalouse. Woody Allen at the Hotel Bristol in Paris. Delighted with the Rolleiflex and the light continuous Ludovic Careme was up nice.

Careme know Paraty, but his debut in Paraty in Focus. At the workshop, more than technical knowledge, vision and wants to share his knowledge with students. His workshop and his exhibition in Arles were named "Photographie - soi-même un autre." In the photograph and the picture you can be another, and yourself. It is the privilege of meeting, the discovery of others and yourself. If the meeting, the picture will be good.

Ludovic Careme definitely likes people and has a generous look. This workshop in Paraty promises to be a wonderful meeting.
