In March 2009, the Spanish photographer Iñaki Domingo and architecture student Carla Arranz Sobrini started the implementation of the Inventory of Social Architecture (Architecture Social Inventary - IAS), a photography project of social architecture, which aims to register the residents of large residential complexes. The first was photographed edfício Copan, emblematic creation of Oscar Niemeyer, located in downtown Sao Paulo.

In the text presents the work, Iñaki explains why it made sense to start at Copan: "It is the largest residential building in South America, so great that it has its own zip code. In addition, Niemeyer recently completed 100 years and, given its relevance to the history of Brazilian architecture, Copan became the ideal to the beginning of our project. "

The result was published in this month of Mark Magazine , a magazine specializing in Dutch architecture. Taking the opportunity of the publication, we contacted Iñaki and asked him to answer five questions:

The project is signed by you and Carla Sobrini. How did this partnership?
Carla and I are in Madrid - she is a student of architecture and I am trained in journalism, although I have always dedicated to photography. The project came about in a haphazard way: she was in Sao Paulo, making an exchange, and I went to visit her. And then we realized the potential of Copan and the interest is in photographing it from a perspective of architectural / social. We started working on the idea, and little by little, the project was taking shape, we realized that there was interest to do so in many countries, in many cities, to see the contrast between the inhabitants and life forms. And so did the project.

As you have selected the characters?
Some were friends, some known and others absolutely unknown - whom we call collaboration. In general, people were very nice, although there were some who were suspicious and would not that we were put in their homes, which also seems completely understandable. Everyone has the right to help - or not.

And how long they were in Copan? You have to know how much raw material?
We work about three weeks, but sometimes we come back, as we were meeting people. We took many photos and almost all are photographed within the project.

After Sao Paulo, in which cities intend to shoot?
We are thinking of cities as Beijing, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Berlin, New Delhi, New York ... Where megalopolis. But we are still studying which of these will be next. Decisions are made on the basis of the buildings that we found. They must unite a series of basic and important features: large buildings, emblematic, with high population density and variety of people and price (both rental and purchase) are not very high. It should preferably be in the city center.

Is there a book project or exhibition, with images of IAS?
Not right now, but hopefully soon we can say otherwise! Currently, we are preparing the project in writing, ask for funding and then inventorying new buildings, its people and their ways of life.
