"Controversies - An Ethical and Legal History of Photography"
© Photo by Michael Light. Nuclear test conducted by the U.S. government in 1958. The photography in photojournalism and in advertising, is not univocal. Instead, it could lead to different interpretations, depending on the eye and judgment of the beholder, and therefore can generate controversy and raise legal and ethical problems. Especially when it is photojournalism. It is showing the exhibition "Controversies - An Ethical and Legal History of Photography," which opens this Thursday, 04/03, the Kunsthaus museum in Vienna, Austria. The show features 80 images taken since the 19th century considered controversial, is the content or legal issues raised by the photographs. The work is the result of many months of research the art historian and lawyer Daniel Girardin Christian Pirker, who decided to tell the story of a series of controversial images in photojournalism and advertising. One example is the photograph of a nun kissing a priest, authored by Oliviero Toscani, used in an advertisement of the Italian company Benetton. Another powerful image is authored by Michael Light, which shows a nuclear test conducted by the U.S. government from 1958. The exhibition runs until June 20, 2010.
